Scope and Content
This series contains a register of persons incarcerated in the Provo City Jail. It was used to record the identity and circumstances of each individual committed to jail. The pre-printed forms in the book provide space to record such information as the name of the prisoner, physical description, special marks, charge, name of arresting officer, process, date committed, date released, how discharged, and any remarks (i.e., escaped). The most common charges resulting in imprisonment are drunkenness and vagrancy, but there are examples of a variety of other charges, including disturbing the peace, violations of the bicycle ordinance, minor entering a saloon, insulting a female, petit larceny, fighting, and cruelty to animals.
At the end of the each year from 1904-1907 the marshal has listed statistics to be included in his annual report to the mayor and city council, including such information as the number of arrests, convictions, and dismissals; the number of days of imprisonment, meals served, head of stock impounded, and the amount collected in fines.
