Scope and Content

The city and town council minute books in this series were originally created as the official record of the Salt Lake City Council meetings. Between 1851 and 1898 handwritten entries were recorded by the Salt Lake City clerk in meetings that were held on a regular basis. Special meetings were scheduled as needed. After 1898 minutes appear in a printed format, with the date of each meeting appearing at the top of the page.

Entries in these minute books contain information about a wide variety of issues pertaining to the growth and development of Salt Lake City. Specific topics that appear frequently in this series include: budgeting and finance issues; taxation; city ordinances and resolutions; petitions; business and professional licensing procedures; sanitation and public health issues; property development in the city; police activities and public safety issues; and improvements in public service such water development and street repairs.

Custody History

Books dated 1851 to 1957 were originally filmed by the Archives division of the Utah State Historical Society in 1958. Because of the poor quality of these microfilm copies, a complete refilming of these minute books (dated 1851 to 1981) was completed by the Utah State Archives in 2006. Original paper copies of these record books remain with the creating office.
