Scope and Content
These reports discuss the operations, funding, management, and outcomes of the county poor house. One of the earliest records includes the property information for the poor house itself. Earlier years are monthly reports, later on a comprehensive quarterly report was prepared for the county government by the appointed superintendent. Reports sometimes list people in residence, while others mention support given to those living in and passing through the county who needed assistance. The final report from the Committee on the Poor was submitted in 1901, though there continued to be some reports on topics such as smallpox until about 1907.
As provided in the 1888 Compiled Laws of Utah, county courts were tasked to "provide for the care and maintenance of the indigent sick or the otherwise dependent poor, transients and residents of the county, erect, officer and maintain hospitals and poor houses." In addition, there would be "a farm and work shops in connection with the county hospital or poor house" (Chapter VI, Section 187, page 299).
