These records are housed in the Utah State Archives' permanent storage room.

The volumes in this series have varying degrees of wear and particular preservation issues that should be noted when volumes are handled. The record books in folders 2, 3, 6, 10, 12, 13, 14 show the most damage with broken spines that have led to page and cover separation from the spine. The record book in folder 1 also appears to have suffered water damage at some point in time which has led to page warping in the latter half of the volume. Finally, the record book in folder 5 shows evidence of multiple pages having been cut out near the end of the volume.

Scope and Content

The books in this series contain minutes of proceedings in the Salt Lake City justice court. Entries are handwritten and often include information on parties involved, complaint charges, brief summaries of proceedings, and verdict or other resolution to the case. Most of the cases recorded in these journals are criminal in nature, and are generally analogous to modern day misdemeanors (including fighting, battery, disturbing the peace, larceny, burglary, drunkenness , vagrancy, etc). There are a handful of civil cases recorded throughout that provide information on lease agreements and broken contracts.

The record book in folder 3 contains a loose document from a proceeding involving Wright V. Trumbo (dated July 05, 1882).
