Scope and Content
The news articles collected in this series are those identified in major national magazines and in national and local newspapers, about the MX missile itself and plans for its deployment in the Great Basin of Nevada and Utah. Newsclippings, whether obtained from the U.S. Air Force Newsclipping Service, or taken directly from local papers are filed together as "Salt Lake City, Utah", or "Nevada", newspapers. A news release expressing the opinions of the First Presidency of the L.D.S. church is included.
Staff members collected news articles as part of an agency attempt to create a centralized source of background information about the MX project. The variety of articles illustrates how the issue evolved in the national and regional press. Articles range from the complex and technical aspects of missiles, national defense, and effect on local communities, to those that express public opinion on these same topics.

Custody History
After the Utah MX Coordination Office was closed in 1981, its records were used as a reference resource by the Office of Planning and Budget. Transfer to the archives occurred in 1984.
