Scope and Content

This series documents the application and renewal process for the registration of trademarks, service marks, and tradenames in Utah. Files frequently include the initial application, trademark samples, proofs of publication, notification of expiration of trademark, renewals of registration, and correspondence related to the registration.

Numerical by trademark number.

Research Note

Those trademarks which were still active in 1984 when the trademark function was transferred from the Lieutenant Governor's office to the Department of Commerce, Division of Corporations are not included in this series. The Division of Corporations retains custody of those items. (See Related Records). Missing files are most likely to be in the custody of the Division of Corporations.

Trademark files from the Department of Commerce. Division of Corporations and Commercial Code, Series 6920, are files registered with the Division of Corporations after the trademark duties were transferred to that agency in 1984.

Inactive trademark files from the Department of Commerce. Division of Corporations and Commercial Code, Series 16626, are files registered with the Division of Corporations after the trademark duties were transferred to that agency in 1984.

Trademark samples from the Secretary of State, Series 20316, Contain samples of non-textual trademarks to be used as a graphic index to the trademark application files.

Trademark index cards from the Lieutenant Governor, Series 20317, act as an alphabetical index to the trademark application files.

Gaps in Series

There are no marks numbered between 2228 and 2399. Since there is no gap in dates between mark number 2227 and mark number 2400, apparently these numbers were never assigned. A gap in assigned numbers also exists between 12000 and 21999, but as no date gap appears between mark number 11999 and 22000, those numbers apparently were never assigned either.

Processing Note

This series was archivally processed by Arlene Schmuland in 1998. Acidic items were interleaved with acid-free paper or photocopied onto acid-free paper.
