Series 29917Spring City (Utah) Poll tax ledger
Dates: 1894-1906.
These records are housed in the Utah State Archives' permanent storage room.
Scope and Content
This series contains a ledger tracking the eligibility of every individual in Spring City liable to pay a poll tax. Poll taxes were levied as fixed sums on every individual of a certain age with payment often required as a prerequisite to exercising or obtaining certain privileges of citizenship such as voting or hunting licenses. This ledger contains such information as the names, birth months and years, and eligibility of Spring City's citizens. City staff noted when a person was disqualified from paying the poll tax for a variety of reasons including advanced age, death, or "removed." The ledger also notes what year the person will no longer be required to pay the tax, based on the person's birth year.
