Scope and Content

This series contains one court docket kept by the Justice of the Peace detailing cases brought before the justice court. The majority of the entries deal with moving violations, mostly speeding tickets, but also drunk driving, improper parking, etc. A few pertain to non vehicular crimes such as petit larceny.

Most of the records either have the original citation or a copy of the original citation attached. This lists details including the driver's name and address, and/or the vehicle owner's address, the make of the vehicle, the license plate number, the time the citation was issued, and the time and place the accused's court appointment was scheduled to take place. Some, though very few entries also contain copies of warrants issued for the arrest of the accused. The book itself lists the arresting officer, the disposition of the case including whether or not the defendant plead guilty, if they posted bail, if there was a trial and what its outcome was, and what sentence was given. It also has a place for comments specific to each case, and an itemized list of fees charged for various court actions, such as swearing in witnesses, or requesting a transcript. The book lists receipts for any fines paid, and lists the names of jurors, witnesses, and attorneys that may have been involved in the case. While the majority of the book deals with citations and fines, the end of the book does contain one civil case regarding an unpaid debt. The front of the book is indexed, allowing cases to be searched by name.
