Historical Note
An agency history is available.
Scope and Content
This series contains a census of the students in the Lark precinct of the Jordan School District in 1918. The records were created in order to collect data on the school-age population in the district. The enumerator recorded information on pre-printed forms in accordance with the legal mandate found in the "Compiled Laws of Utah, 1907", section 1891x13, which was pasted in the front of the record. "The Board of Education shall appoint suitable persons for each school representative precinct who shall act as enumerators for school population for said precinct, and visit every house therein between the 15th and 31st of July of each year, and ascertain and enter upon the lists the name of every person between the ages of six and eighteen years residing in such precinct, and also the name, age, post office address, and name of the parent or guardian of every deaf or dumb person over the age of five and under the age of thirty years, too deaf or dumb to receive an education in the public schools . Such enumeration lists shall contain all the information required by law and such other information as the State Superintendent and the Board of Education may require."
The information recorded on the pre-printed forms does not include all the information outlined in the law, but does include the names of the enumeration district and the the enumerator, as well as the children's names, age, if they can read and write, if they attended public, private, or no school the previous year, if they were "colored" or "white", and if they were deaf or blind. Notes were added (probably the following year) indicating if a child and moved or died. A check mark presumably indicated that the child was still part of the local school population.

Gaps in Series
Because the statewide school census law was enacted in 1905 and remained in effect in some form until 1980, it may be assumed that these records were created for the other school precincts in Jordan School District and in other school districts throughout the state over a long period of time. This record from Lark precinct in 1918 is the only known surviving record of its kind from Jordan School District.
Processing Note
This series was archivally processed by Alan Barnett in July 2012.
