Scope and Content

This series contains official student registers from the Scott School (or 36th District School) located in the Millcreek area of Salt Lake County. The later registers are in a standardized Utah School Register format and record such information as student names, ages, parent names, residence location, and daily attendance and some scholastic evaluations. Earlier registers also note whether students can read and write and whether their parents are Mormon or not. The registers are generally arranged by school year, teacher, and grade. The registers also include school-year schedules and various school statistics. The 1898-99 register for Ella Wingrove's class includes a list of contributors to a "Lafayette Monument" and the 1902-03 register for Ruth Copp's class includes a "Daily Program of Recitation and Study" and a "Register of Visitors". Several other documents were found tucked in the registers, including a "Roll of Honor" dated 1 November 1886, a description of the topography of Township 25 South, Range 12 East (Salt Lake Meridian), student arithmetic test papers, and other notes.

Arrangement

Chronological.

Custody History

These records presumably came into the possession of Granite High School when the high school began operating in the Scott School building located east of 5th East on 33rd South in 1907. The records came into the custody of the Utah State Archives after the closure of Granite High School in 2009.

Gaps in Series

Registers for many of the years and some of the grades from the time span of this series are not accounted for. Some of the registers that are missing in the series may exist elsewhere. At least one register (1892-93?) was located along with other items stored in the attic of the Scott School building in 2009 (See Deseret News 19 Nov 2009). This one known register is in the possession of the Pioneer Craft House.

Processing Note

This series was processed in December 2009 by Alan Barnett. Registers were arranged in chronological order and miscellaneous loose papers were taken out of the registers and grouped together.
