Series 26261District Court (Third District : Tooele County) Naturalization certificate books
Dates: 1896-1955.
These records are housed in the Utah State Archives' permanent storage room.
Scope and Content
This series contains the court record of naturalizations granted by the court. The exact form of the records varied over time. The early records in the series are copies of the certificates given to new citizens, filled out in a pre-printed form book. They include the date, name of the applicant, place of origin, current place of residence, and the signature of the judge.
After 1906 the courts used standardized forms issued by the federal Naturalization Service. These later forms included stubs in pre-printed booklets from which two copies of certificates were torn, one to give to the newly naturalized citizen and the other to be sent to the Naturalization Service. The stub (Naturalization Service Form 390) was filled out and kept as a record in the court. The stubs recorded the essential information from the certificate, including certificate number, applicant name and age, when and where the declaration of intention was filed, when and where the petition for citizenship was filed, name, age, and residence of wife, name, age, and residence of minor children, date the order of naturalization was filed, the volume and page on which the petition for naturalization is recorded, and the naturalized citizen's signature. The book covering from 1930 into the 1950's includes citizenship certificate stubs (Form 2207-A) along with lists of Citizenship Petitions Granted (Form 2228).
