Scope and Content

This series consists of files and documents gathered by members of Governor Michael O. Leavitt's press office during his administration. The records include original and copied news releases, reference materials on important topics, and copies of news articles. For specific topics, please consult the container list, however some common ones include the Utah Centennial, Olympic Winter Games, wilderness, campaigns and elections, education, legislative issues, organizations such as the Western Governor's Association and Republican Governors Association, and technology. Also included in this series are speeches, speech drafts, statements for various appearances, talking points, and testimony before the United States Congress.

Arrangement

Alphabetical by subject, thereunder by date if known or applicable.

Research Note

The subjects of the folder list are not exhaustive as more general ones may contain more specific subjects. Also, similar or related subjects (such as "CHIP" and "Utah Children Health Program," for example) may be widely separated in the alphabetical arrangement; researchers should consider various possibilities when looking for a particular subject.

Preferred Citation

Cite the Utah State Archives and Records Service, the creating agency name, the series title, and the series number.

Processing Note

This series was reviewed for the presence of personal information, especially in regards to scanning for online access. Items such as resumes were not retained as part of this review, however many other documents initially flagged were kept since the information was public or referred to office contact information. Small "Post-It" notes were removed unless they contained significantly relevant information, in which case the notes were photocopied and then removed. Other notes often regarding reminders, filing locations, or separate notes on drafts generally were removed. The contents of the series originally were transferred as two sets within alphabetical subject files (as Press Office Papers and Press Documents). They were merged into one series since they originated from the same staff office. All folder titles or subjects were retained, though some were normalized such as for the date format and spelling out acronyms, along with organizing folders according to an alphabetical arrangement. This series was processed by Gina Strack in April 2008 with microfilming for preservation completed in June 2008.
