Scope and Content

The Black Mountain Mining District was organized in Minersville, Beaver County, Utah in July 1895 in accordance with federal mining law which allows individuals to claim mineral wealth in the public domain (Statutes at Large, Treaties, and Proclamations, of the United States of America, vol. 17, 1872, chap. 152). In the nineteenth century, miners in local areas organized mining districts to manage mining operations and keep records of claims. The Black Mountain Mining District mining book begins with an index and is followed by about 20 notices of location for claims within the district. Each location notice identifies the claim by a unique name and provides a description which includes dimensions and location. Location notices also provide the names of claim holders and dates of discovery and recording. The district recorder transcribed by-laws for the district in the back of the book.
