Scope and Content
The Washington County recorder kept a mortgage index beginning in 1954, which identifies mortgages and mortgage related documents. She recorded this index in two separate volumes, one referencing mortgagors and the other mortgagees. For each entry, she noted the type of document, the names of mortgagee and mortgagor, the date of the document and date of filing, and a description of the property. She included the book and page number where the document was recorded. The index refers to mortgages, corporate mortgages, trust deeds, and satisfactions or releases of mortgage. Frequently, releases of mortgage also include the book and page where the mortgage was originally recorded. Infrequently, the index also refers to chattel mortgages, contracts, liens and releases of a lien, notices of default and Federal income tax liens and releases.
Arrangement
By mortgagee or mortgagor, thereunder alphabetical.
The recorder kept separate books indexing mortgagees and mortgagors. Therefore, each entry was made in both indexes. She grouped entries alphabetically and then listed them chronologically thereunder.
Research Note
Inclusive dates in each index book are not exact because the recorder carried each letter forward on a different date (approximately 1973). The mortgagor index identifies the party granting the document, and the mortgagee index identifies the party receiving it. Therefore, a mortgage is listed in the mortgagor index under the name of the persons taking out the mortgage and in the mortgagee index under the name of the financial institution. A release of mortgage is the reverse, listing the financial institution as the mortgagor and the borrower as a mortgagee.
