Scope and Content

The State Planning board investigated the proposed Escalante National Monument to determine the value of the land and the possible consequences of declaring the land a monument. The original plan encompassed 6,968 square miles, thereby causing controversy over the possibility that eight percent of the total area of the state would be withdrawn from development. Included in this series is the committee's correspondence; data concerning grazing and mineral resources; a boundary description; map of the monument; minutes and transcripts of meetings; newspaper clippings and journal articles about federal policies; a proposed proclamation; and a planning board proposal.
