Scope and Content

This series contains records involving investigations into a coal shortage in Utah. The Attorney General held a hearing to see if there was an immediate remedy or if the shortage merited a legislative remedy; a copy of that hearing transcript is included. Also included is a copy of the hearing transcript for a hearing held by a joint legislative committee and copies of the subpoena issued by the legislative committee to those asked to testify at the hearing. In 1917 a Legislative Committee investigated the reasons for the coal shortage in the state of Utah. Various mine owners blamed the shortage on what they considered injustices committed by the railroads, and both the mine owners and railroads claimed they lacked sufficient rail cars to transport enough coal for the citizens of Utah. This record was created to determine why there was a coal shortage in Utah. Governor Bamberger owned railroads and mines; therefore, he held interests in the subject on many levels.
