Scope and Content

This series contains newspaper clippings relating to the gubernatorial election of 1956 and various issues facing state government at the time. The purpose of the clipping files is unclear. While a few of the clippings are undated, those that are dated fall between July and December of 1956. Furthermore, with the exception of a folder entitled "Politics (General)" and clippings about George D. Clyde's gubernatorial campaign, the clippings almost all date from November and December of 1956, following Clyde's election as governor. While the clippings may have been collected by Governor Lee's office, it is possible that they were collected by George Clyde's staff as they tracked publicity about Clyde's campaign and as the Governor-elect worked to come up to speed on current issues in preparation for his inauguration. The series may have been classified under Lee's administration simply because of the dates of the clippings. Regardless of who assembled the clippings, they contain more information about George D. Clyde's election and preparation for taking office than any other topic.
