Series 21104
Road Commission. Department of Highways Tourist access roads publications
Dates: 1964-1966.
These records are housed in the Utah State Archives' permanent storage room.
Scope and Content
This series contains three separate versions of a published report that was produced for the State Road Commission of Utah by the Utah State Department of Highways." Two of the reports are entitled "Access Roads for the Golden Circle - America's Newest Playground," while the third is entitled "Access Roads for America's Colorful Wonderland - The Nation's Newest Playground."
Each of the three bound publications in this series contains essentially the same content. A table of contents at the beginning of each document lists the distinct sections for "Orientation," "Wonderland," "Economics," Interested Agencies," "Highway Needs," "Financing Needed Highways," and "Public Interests." The scope of the publication is focused on developing highways and tourist resources in the Four Corners region of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona.
It appears that these publications were created with intent of distributing to both policy makers and individual citizens. They include a variety of maps, historic photographs, highway funding needs, and general biographical sketches on multiple recreation areas (including Glen Canyon, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Dead Horse Point, and Lake Powell). The last section of each document is dedicated to the reproduction of correspondence and recommendations from various state and local government agencies from each of the areas that would be directly impacted by the work being proposed by the Department of Highways.
