Scope and Content
This series contains surviving letters received and sent by the members of the Castle Gate Relief Fund Committee, a committee appointed by Governor Mabey to oversee the distribution of subscribed donations after the Castle Gate mine explosion in March 1924. The correspondence begins in 1924 and ends in 1936 when the fund was exhausted and the committee disbanded.
The correspondence relates primarily to the organization and duties of the committee members. Initially, the correspondence concerns requests from individuals to receive money from the fund. Resignations from committee members, governor correspondence, social worker findings, and bank statements are all included. General office paperwork such as memos that notify committee members of upcoming meetings is also included. This can serve to document the duties and methods of the committee.
In the back there is a copy of the final report sent to Governor Blood with the final statements of fund allocation. Subsequently there are copies of each committee member's letter of commendation from the governor.
