Scope and Content

This series contains newspaper clippings, correspondence and reports related to publicity acquired by the Governor and his office, as well as multimedia documents and publicity photographs of the Governor. Materials were created by several local and national newspapers and by individual constituents as well as members of the private sector and other agencies of local government. The materials display several opinions regarding Governor Matheson and his office, as well as the impact of his administration through dealings within the state and on the national level. Specific subject matters of note in this series include attempts by the Utah Legislature to pass cable television decency legislation (and the Governor's veto of those bills), prison overcapacity, education spending and overcrowding issues, the closure of an inter-tribal Native American boarding school in Brigham City, and the effects of nuclear testing on the health of Southern Utah residents. In addition, an assortment of issues related to Governor Matheson's rise to the head of the National Governor's Association, coupled with that organizations ongoing struggles to meet on common ground with the Reagan presidency.
