Scope and Content

This series documents work done by the This is the Place Monument Commission to construct a historic monument at the mouth of Emigration Canyon in Salt Lake City. This location was of historic significance as it marked the end of the 1,300 mile Mormon Trail. The monument commission was actively involved in overseeing planning, design and construction of the monument in the throughout the 1930's and 1940's. This work culminated in a cornerstone ceremony at the site of the monument on April 5, 1947. In 1951 the Monument was placed under State control and the Utah Historical Society was tasked with overseeing its management. Eventually this duty would fall on the Division of Utah State Parks and Recreation.

The first two boxes in this series contain records that directly pertain to the This is the Place Monument. They include correspondence to/from Taylor Woolley who served as the landscape architect on the project, as well as correspondence to/from sculptor Mahonri Young, who was responsible for much of the artwork found on the monument. Other records in these boxes include photographs, newspaper clippings, maps, magazines, programs, pamphlets, and reports.

The third box in this series contains the contents from the in-basket of Taylor Wooley from his service as landscape architect on the project. In addition to This is the Place Monument materials, it also includes records pertaining to the Beason Memorial Chapel in Memorial Grove (Woolley worked on both projects). This box also contains information gathered by Woolley on Mahonri Young, photographs of various locales and sculptures, newspaper clippings, correspondence, pamphlets, and reports.

Lastly, this series includes one set of records on microfiche, which provide a summary of details related to a 1975 attempt by the State of Utah to exchange State Park property at This is the Place Monument for property in East Canyon. The State's goal was to acquire portions of the Pioneer Trail for preservation purposes. The records on microfiche include a report from the private Oak Hills Association to Utah Representative Garth Jones stating a case why land from This is the Place Monument should not be used in such a trade. The seven page report that accompanies the letter includes sections entitled: Proposed Land Exchange (page 1); History (page 2); "The Trade" (page 3); Legal Considerations (page 4); "Why Not?" (page 5); Conclusion (page 6); and Map (page 7).
