Scope and Content
In pursuing its legislative mandate to "erect a suitable building" to serve as the state capitol, the Commission entered into various legal agreements during the construction process. This series contains copies of bonds, contracts, and agreements issued by the Capitol Commission including those for furnishings, heating, lighting, fire proofing, decorative work such as painting and sculpture, flooring, and marble work. Building costs such as for materials and labor, insurance and bonding practices at the beginning of the twentieth century, the value of furnishings, and contractual agreements between general contractors and subcontractors are documented. This series includes information on Utah artists and craftsmen, architects, city and state officials, and significant information about construction techniques, planning, and labor costs from the period.

Correspondence from the Capitol Commission, Series 1132, contains related correspondence between the individual contractors, capitol architect, Capitol Commission, state and local government, and interested citizens addressing the process of awarding contracts.
Bids from the Capitol Commission, Series 11271, include the individual bids submitted by contractors as well as those submitted by competitors.
Records from the Capitol Commission, Series 11272, hold related information and agreements with the Architects Commission, the Building and Grounds Superintendent, Capitol Commission Secretaryship, and James Stewart and Company. The above individuals, and many others, are mentioned in this series.
Newspaper clippings from the Capitol Commission, Series 11273, contain numerous articles addressing the bidding process, the competition for a capitol architect, the awarding of important contracts and bonds, and information on the utilization of Utah labor and raw materials.

Processing Note
The BONDS AND CONTRACTS were processed to the item level with acidic documents removed and replaced with xerox copies on acid free paper. Duplicate copies were weeded, and the individual bonds and contracts, while remaining in original alphabetical order, were arranged in chronological order within the files to improve access.
