Eli Houston Murray

1880-1886

President Rutherford B. Hayes appointed Eli Houston Murray as territorial governor of Utah. Governor Murray further incited tension between the Mormon population and the federal government by certifying the election of Allen G. Campbell as delegate to Congress although, George Q. Cannon, an LDS leader and polygamist received ten times the vote. Murray's attacks on Mormons spread beyond Utah borders and influenced national policies, namely legislation concerning polygamy. President Hayes reappointed Governor Murray for a second term, but he was later removed from office by President Grover Cleveland in 1886.
